Another interesting film I saw at Anim’est in Bucharest was the charming stop-motion film, Made in Spain by Coke Rioboo. Using tiny railway model people, Coke constructs a playful version of a day in the life of Spain, exploring elements of bureaucracy, religion, bullfighting and of course the complex culture of the beach. It’s an abstract film with no dialogue which makes it even more captivating. There’s a real sense of dysfunction but told with a light charm that further adds to its appeal. Coke has developed an iconic and instantly recognisable style and one which I hope he expands upon with further work.
